Taking STAND : Little steps India is taking to “reply” global heavyweights.

The second term in office for Indian PM Dr. Manmohan Singh has been quite a  rough ride. Never ending scams, scandals, corruption, violence against women, economic slowdown, and all them leading to rise of NaMo despite series of counter attempts by the savior – RaGa, the “prince” as the opponents call him. While the Congress government was already in enough trouble “dealing” with invective opponent, trying hard to allay the fickle and frustrated public enticed by the idea of having a party of the “common man”, it now  has an additional problem. The Indian government has to take on global heavyweights – the US, Italy / European Union.

India is a rising power with studies suggesting her economy bound to surpass traditional powerhouses in a couple of years time, while she is already the global leader in importing defense equipment. With this, sooner than later, India is gonna get to make her say in the international stage during events of global power play. Until now India has been mostly quiet, basically choosing no sides, having none to very less to say, excluding the issues related to Pakistan and China. While India’s “minding own business” might have been a good strategy while being completely focused in development. But that was 80s and 90s and we are already in second decade of 21st century and somehow Inida will certainly need to have her own voice in global politics, apart from echoing the US. While Pakistan and China have always been the traditional adversaries of Inida, but Indian people will certainly demand their country to take stand, no matter who may be on the opposite side. Taking such stands is very unlikely as long as India only echoes what her ally says and have nothing more nor less to say.

Almost two years back, two Italian marine soldiers guarding a private vessel opened fire killing two fishermen in Indian water. While Italians argue that they mistook the fishermen for pirates, Indian side presses that the soldiers opened fire without following standard procedure when pirates are suspected. Almost two years and the formal case hearing against the marines is still pending. Meanwhile, the marines flew to their country for voting in their general election as well as celebrating Christmas, and finally returned back after India pressed hard, despite some reluctance by Italy in sending them. Who is gonna file the case against them, and at what charges, it is still undecided and Italy on the other hand is doing everything from mobilizing European Union to sending delegates repeatedly to India. While the central government could opt towards softer treatment, the Kerala state government is in no mood for any soft measures and wants harsh punishments to the marines. The stakes are high for Indian government, bilateral ties in one side and the upcoming general elections on the other.

Few weeks back an Indian diplomat – Devyani Khobragade was arrested and strip searched in the US, for allegedly underpaying her domestic help. US attorney refused to drop charges against her and ultimately she flew back to India accounting the diplomatic immunity she had for working for the UN. The charges against her are still in the court in the US. India in response asked two American diplomats (Wayne May, who headed the US embassy’s security team in New Delhi, and his wife Alicia Muller May ) in Delhi, who openly mocked India in social media. An article in FIRST POST  says :

In their three years in India, the couple let their dislike for the country they served in run freely on Facebook. May’s wife Alicia joined a discussion over an article that claims non-vegetarians are more inclined to commit violence and sexual crimes to say, “It’s the vegetarians that are doing the raping, not the meat eaters — this place is just so bizarre.” When another friend said that he had never raped anyone, Alicia wrote, “Applies only to Indians, not westerners!”
The Indian “holy cow” is a recurring theme in their posts, starting from the time May was posted in New Delhi in 2010 where he bemoans the unavailability of beef in India. His wife Alicia captions another photo “Stupid Cow”. A friend comments, “You just insulted their god…,” Alicia retorted, “Not the first time, not the last time.”

In a photograph posted online, they commented that their pet dog Paco looked bigger and in better health than their Indian gardener. May crowed that this was because his dog got more protein in his diet than the gardener did.

These are just representative events and things like these are certain to happen in the future and will happen with many other countries as well. While India might enjoy superiority, and at times even dictate the south Asian neighbors to get the work done as required for the Indian government, now is the time India should step up. South Asia is no place anymore for India to try and test her power. It will be for the good of India and yes, South Asia too, if Indian government tries to analyze the bigger picture here. Internal conflicts apart, a comprehensive agreement is necessary between all parties and governments in India to amend their foreign policies.

Meanwhile, it is equally important India have her own “voice” in global issues and not just stay silent or echo her allies. Otherwise, who’s gonna take  India seriously, of course, beside Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan etc. ?

The Anti-American Nebule : Why criticism of Bill O’Reilly and Stephen Colbert is NOT ANTI-AMERICAN !

Image

Honestly, I did not expect this surge in web traffic towards my blog after my post criticizing the two intelligent Americans; Bill O’Reilly and Stephen Colbert, as they go on and on disparaging Nepal, Nepali and our culture on their national televisions. Even though both of them were seen with burst of laughter, it was not at all funny to us, and I really doubt, any American who has “traveled” and “seen places and cultures” would find that non-offensive but funny.

But when I read the blog after I posted it, I did feel like may be somewhere it was quite harsh to call what these intellects did in general an “American way”. I am an amateur blogger and and admittedly, I do not write quite often. But the way Mr Sudarshan Subedi was humiliated with such an irresponsible journalism, I was literally “P***** off” like many other people and I just had to “say something”. That was partly because people like O’Reilly and Colbert, who are blinded by their sense of overrating themselves, keep displaying their ferocious nature time and again with comments and acts to belittle other. And, it was also ironic to me especially because it has not even been 1 months that I had written an essay on ” Greatness of any society can be measured by the greatness its individuals, artists, scientists etc achieve” during my GRE Test, where at one juncture I gave an example on how American society can be a lesson for many other societies aspiring greatness and how other can learn from ” American Way” of sharing common dream, working hard, being liberal to differences and eccentricities and respecting everyone for the way they are. The progress of American society is undoubtedly largely based on such sense of mutual respect and mutual responsibilities. And within less than 1 month that I “idealized” American way, Mr. O’Reilly taught me a lesson with ironic display of what I again call the “behavior of an smug”. I was hurt with the way he belittled us and at the same time I got shocked and surprised how come American people find that “funny” ? May be I had overrated the American greatness or may be not as these two geniuses  are not the representatives of American societies.

Anyways, looking by the post, one might find it Anti-American, a label which is so infective that anyone with just a few wrong lines and few eccentric acts is likely to encounter. But that is not the case here. All this, because, more people from America have visited my blog in last 3 days than rest of the people from all over the world combined, which I think, is not very “mainstream”.

With big roles come bigger responsibilities and anyone who aspires to be a leader, more importantly a global leader, is expected to act, behave and handle things in certain way. A great society is not expected mocking other societies and culture. A wise and intelligent never mocks anyone calling himself “the most intelligent” as Colbert does while stating “America is the holiest land on earth”, if it is really so, it was never really necessary to “state” that, Mr Colbert.

Here’s something which I think most will agree with, and this is not something I said..

The greatness of America lies not in being more enlightened than any other nation, but rather in her ability to repair her faults.
Alexis de Tocqueville

Finding Peace in the ” LOUD “

Concentrating, focusing all our attention to the things we want to and avoiding all the distractions that our desultory mind keeps creating while we are trying to do  “something “, is at times very difficult, especially when your’re not having very positive view about the life you’re living, facing uncertain future and confusing present while fighting the regrets of the past. Admittedly, with pressure of deadlines, mounting piles of incomplete works, mediocre performance at things you are supposedly good at, frustration with the self, knowing exactly the everything we gotta do and things we gotta avoid doing an still not being able to “do what we gotta do” etc., they create suffocation and make it harder.

All of us go through such situations every once in a while. While some of us might be strong and intelligent enough to handle them quite comfortably, many of us who are not quite good at doing so might be left in despair. We try various things, from reading self help guides to meditation, taking a break from regular life, meditating, going on a holiday or trying out an adventure. But then, after we come back, get down and restart our work, everything might not have been “magically good” and the “concentration” problem might still be there.

It is a general trend that most of us go for a peaceful environment while trying to focus on the things we want to. This is undoubtedly an excellent method and works fine for many people. However, it may not do any good for a disturbed desultory mind. What I’m talking about is getting peace from the loud. Many of us try slow, soothing, inspirational music and they, as a matter of fact, work pretty well most of the times. But hardly many of us try listening loud and explosive songs while we are disturbed/distracted and can’t focus on our track. Surprisingly, it also works sometimes ! Well, may not work to everyone and all the time, but because it’s been working for me I’m sure it’s gonna work for some people beside me, as well.

I know, no one is going to advice you memorize the GRE Vocabulary listening the SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA or TITANIUM by DAVID GUETTA but I’m doing it myself, right at this very moment. While the loudness of music certainly blows away most of the distractions my mind creates, at the same time I also don’t feel as pressurized and stressed while studying as I would without this music. This is probably because there is false sense of realization that I’m not actually studying but listening the music. Nor do I feel bad that I’m not studying, because, again, the similar false realization works as if I’m actually studying and the music is just a distraction my good mind created to cheat my bad mind making it feel that I’m not studying, but enjoying music !

CAUTION : This method is supposed to be applied only sometimes. I’m afraid our work will not be completed if we try doing it entirely this way.

Good day !

WED 2013 and Relevance with Biomass Energy

Let’s begin with the theme of WED-2013, as derived from UNEP Site.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day celebrations is Think.Eat.Save. Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages you to reduce your foodprint. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.

While the planet is struggling to provide us with enough resources to sustain its 7 billion people (growing to 9 billion by 2050), FAO estimates that a third of global food production is either wasted or lost. Food waste is an enormous drain on natural resources and a contributor to negative environmental impacts.

If food is wasted, it means that all the resources and inputs used in the production of all the food are also lost. For example, it takes about 1,000 litres of water to produce 1 litre of milk and about 16,000 litres goes into a cow’s food to make a hamburger. The resulting greenhouse gas emissions from the cows themselves, and throughout the food supply chain, all end up in vain when we waste food.

In fact, the global food production occupies 25% of all habitable land and is responsible for 70% of fresh water consumption, 80% of deforestation, and 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. It is the largest single driver of biodiversity loss and land-use change……

Okey, so what can we do ?  Here‘s what we can :

Think next time you shop about how much food you actually need and don’t buy more than that; also think about where your food comes from and how it was produced – and if you don’t know, ask your retailer or restaurateur. Remember that every time you waste food, you are also wasting a host of valuable resources that went into producing and transporting that food.

Eat and support foods that are grown organically and locally – and if you can, grow your own. Eat to live, don’t live to eat – overconsumption is also wasteful. Remain aware that while many people suffer from obesity, millions also suffer and die from hunger and starvation.

Save food rather than throwing it away to be wasted. Saving food can be as simple as storing it correctly so it can be eaten at a later stage, giving it to someone who is hungry, composting rotten foods or donating to local food banks, soup kitchens or farms that require foods for compost.

So how does the Biomass Energy come in the picture ?

While reducing the food wastage is the first step in feeding the hungry population in the world, this alone is not enough. With already so many people going to bed hungry and many dying because of starvation, plus the ever increasing population, we gotta grow more and more than more. The production of crops must increase proportionally with the population, if every individual in the world is to get enough food and proper nutrition.

This means billions of tons of straw will be produced and the amount will keep increasing along with the growing crop yield. Ghaly  et al reported that wheat crop alone yields over 750 million ton of straw of which 60-80 %  can be utilized for energy through energy conversion processes like pyrolysis, combustion and gassification.

While the biomass energy is still in the phase of development and big commercial usage are yet to be realized, this technology is promising as well as necessary, not just to produce renewable energy but also for proper and better management and utilization of those billion tons of straw, the world produces every year.

People are amazing !!!

A while back, one of my FB friend shared a link with title ” I want my photos in all these poses ” !

These days facebook has become more like pass time reading and sharing CRAZY and WEIRDEST possible stuffs rather than “staying connected with our people”. From so called awareness against ” possible cancer due to scratching of recharge cards” to ” share and get a good news within 10 minutes” kinda stuffs, facebook has them all. Government of  India “found facebook and twitter(mainly, among other social networks) a prime cause of ethnic violence and its spread in ASSAM state”. See, how powerful they are, to SHARE ! With this it’s no longer difficult to establish a fact that ” facebook=share”.

While I was busy digesting what others shared and figuring out what to share from my side, I suddenly found that link ! That friend usually shares , to be honest, quite interesting stuffs,so without second thought I clicked the link and………………………………….

Forgive me ,but I don’t suppose my English is that well built to explain what I saw and what followed ! You can see what was on the link HERE !

That link leads to a personal profile on Google Plus !

Well, the person may not keep the content public after sudden traffic directed towards those contents ! In case you can’t find it, well, you’re late ! The show’s over ! The poster of the show is below !

IF YOU DO GO TO THAT LINK, PLEASE COME BACK AND VOTE ON HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT IT ?

See what an amazing person did !
